Erasmus’s De conscribendis epistolis and Ancient Epistolary Theory
Abstract
This paper will analyze three of Diderot's (Denis Diderot, 1713–1784) narratives: This is Not a Story (Ceci n’est pas un conte, 1773), Madame de La Carlière (Madame de La Carlière, 1773), and Supplement to Bougainville's Journey (Supplément au Voyage de Bougainville, 1796). According to the author's idea, these three stories form a triptych on morality and group issues concerning human nature, ethics of love, differences between social norms, and individual moral principles of man. Therefore, a closer look at the stories mentioned above, which serve as literary illustrations of Diderot's philosophical search for morality, considers whether natural morality is sufficient for a man or whether civil laws are necessary to build an excellent social morality. This research also wants to answer whether, based on the analyzed examples, individual principles take precedence over social conventions or the opposite is the case.
